Native American
Genealogical Resources for
New Mexico

By Karen Stein Daniel, CGSM
About the author

Patterned after the 3rd edition of Genealogical Resources for New Mexico, this new resource guide is for genealogical and family history researchers of New Mexico Apache, Navajo, Pueblo, and Ute families.

The guide is extensively researched with annotated bibliographies. It includes chapters on archives, libraries, and museums, church resources, Federal Government resources, Family History Library microfilm, internet resources, vital record resources, and additional resources.

Information is also included for members of these tribes who may have lived, at least part of the time, in Arizona, Colorado, or Utah.

The book is indexed and contains 255 pages, keys to using the guide, a list of terms, and a discussion of the Genealogical Proof Standard.

[Ed. note] Particularly interesting and helpful is a section titled "Some keys to Native American Research in New Mexico and the Use of this Volume" which provides guidelines, including: "Researching Native American families requires a thorough reading in the history of a tribe and the areas it was known to occupy . . ." [For example: "Learning that an ancestor was Apache will be only the beginning. Were they Jicarilla, Mescalero, Chiricahua, Warm Springs, or another band?"] This book describes the difficulties that can be expected along with suggestions to overcome some of the daunting steps required, and provides names of the books, microfilm, or articles that contain answers.
